Implementation and use of electronic medical records in blood management and transfusion practice – Blood Matters survey report 2021

The Blood Matters survey report 2021 illustrates current design and implementation of blood management and transfusion practice within an EMR, and the effect on patient safety and blood use. Findings may assist and inform sites yet to implement an EMR, and help identify areas for optimisation for those with an EMR. Reported success factors, challenges, failures, and benefits of the various implementation approaches are highlighted.

The Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion (ANZSBT) published the Guidelines for the implementation and use of electronic medical records for transfusion in July 2021 (ANZSBT 2021). Participating health services will receive a summary of aggregated survey data and summarised individual health service responses aligned to ANZSBT guidelines (Crispin 2022).

Blood Matters recommends that health services:
•       circulate the report and individual data (participating health services) to relevant areas
•       review the report and individual data noting current compliance and gaps in practice
