Who or what is a Transfusion Practitioner?

Common terms that would be encompassed by the Transfusion Pratitioner (TP) title include (but not totally encompassing or limited to):

  • Transfusion Nurse
  • Transfusion Safety/Quality Officer
  • Haemovigilance Officer/Nurse
  • Transfusion Clinical Nurse Consultant
  • Blood Management Coordinator/Nurse
  • Patient Blood Management Coordinator/Practitioner

Roles have responsibility for sustainable organisational implementation strategies, consultancy, and advocacy (e.g. ANZSBT guidelines practice changes), monitor and evaluate practice to risk assess and identify opportunities for improvement.

Roles are often tailored to align with individual organisations’ strategic direction, including meeting national/international guidelines and standards (eg NSQHS Standard & in Australia). TPs often provide leadership for project management aimed to improve transfusion safety and clinical practice.

Activities in these roles may include clinical governance (policy and procedure development and implementation), haemovigilance, incident investigation, clinical audit, data analysis, patient blood management, education and training, IT enhancement advice, workflow development; quality improvement and assistance to meet accreditation requirements.

The healthcare backgrounds of TPs in Australia and New Zealand are predominantly nursing with several scientists also undertaking the role.
