Transfusion Science Committee

The Transfusion Science Standing Committee will:

  • Develop and maintain scientific and technical guidelines relating to transfusion practice
  • Develop ‘position statement’ documents in the areas of transfusion science on behalf of the Society
  • Provide an Australian and New Zealand perspective on scientific aspects of transfusion to Council, to inform and influence political decision-making
  • Respond as required on scientific and technical questions

Ms Alison Badger (Chair)

Alison Badger is an Operations Support Officer at the New Zealand Blood Service, working within Cellular Therapy and Tissue Banking. She brings over 20 years of experience in transfusion science, including seven years as a Senior/Supervising Scientist in the National Red Cell Serology Reference Laboratory.
Originally trained as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Scotland, Alison spent a decade with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, specialising in complex red cell serology. She earned an MSc in Transfusion, Transplantation, and Tissue Banking in 2011 before relocating to New Zealand in 2014.
Alison is passionate about professional development and advancing patient care. In 2019, she received a scholarship to train in the Monocyte Monolayer Assay (MMA) in the USA and later led the validation and implementation of this service in New Zealand, improving transfusion options for patients with challenging requirements. She is an active contributor to the profession, joining the Transfusion Science Committee and ANZSBT Council in 2021 and becoming Chair of the TSC in 2025.

  • Simon is the Scientific Lead with the Clinical Education Team (CET) at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. He has over 40 years experience working in transfusion services or hospital transfusion laboratories in the UK, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and Australia.

  • Hayleigh is the current 2IC in Blood Transfusion at the Royal Children’s and Women’s hospitals in Melbourne. She has over 18 years experience in Blood Transfusion and Haematology laboratories.

  • Helen is a Blood Bank Principal Scientist at SA Pathology as well as having oversight of the Blood Bank Laboratory at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She has over 40 years of Blood Banking experience in Australia.

  • Diane is the Senior/Supervising Scientist in the National Reference Laboratory at the New Zealand Blood & Organ Service. She has 18 years experience in transfusion science working in Ireland and New Zealand.

  • Nicola is the Christchurch Blood Bank Team Leader at the New Zealand Blood & Organ Service. She has 17 years experience working in transfusion science in New Zealand, the UK, and Australia.

  • Sen-Pao is a Medical Laboratory Scientist at Monash Health Pathology in Melbourne. He has 5 years experience in transfusion science, working in both Australia and Taiwan.

  • Candice is a Senior Research Officer in the Cellular Therapies Division at Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. She has 20 years experience working in transfusion science across Australia and the UK.

  • Brett is the Senior Laboratory Manager at North Shore Private Laboratory, Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology. He has over 30 years experience working in transfusion science.
