Transfusion Science Committee

The Transfusion Science Standing Committee will:

  • Develop and maintain scientific and technical guidelines relating to transfusion practice
  • Develop ‘position statement’ documents in the areas of transfusion science on behalf of the Society
  • Provide an Australian and New Zealand perspective on scientific aspects of transfusion to Council, to inform and influence political decision-making
  • Respond as required on scientific and technical questions

Ms Alison Badger (Chair)

Alison Badger is an Operations Support Officer at the New Zealand Blood Service, working within Cellular Therapy and Tissue Banking. She brings over 20 years of experience in transfusion science, including seven years as a Senior/Supervising Scientist in the National Red Cell Serology Reference Laboratory.
Originally trained as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Scotland, Alison spent a decade with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service, specialising in complex red cell serology. She earned an MSc in Transfusion, Transplantation, and Tissue Banking in 2011 before relocating to New Zealand in 2014.
Alison is passionate about professional development and advancing patient care. In 2019, she received a scholarship to train in the Monocyte Monolayer Assay (MMA) in the USA and later led the validation and implementation of this service in New Zealand, improving transfusion options for patients with challenging requirements. She is an active contributor to the profession, joining the Transfusion Science Committee and ANZSBT Council in 2021 and becoming Chair of the TSC in 2025.
